Pay Dirt collects little personal information. You can read every page without an account, and we collect your email address only if you sign up for the newsletter or write to us.
This notice explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it and your rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).
Who is responsible
The responsible party for the personal information described here is Pay Dirt’s publisher, named in the small print at the foot of every page.
The responsible party’s registered details and the name of our Information Officer will be added here.
What we collect
| What | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address | When you sign up for the newsletter and confirm by double opt-in | To send the newsletter you asked for |
| Your name, email address and what you write | When you email the desk | To reply, correct an error or update a directory listing |
| Anonymous visit statistics | When you read a page | To see which pages are read, so we know what to write next |
The newsletter is not open yet. When it opens, it will be sent through Beehiiv, an email newsletter service. You will be added to the list only after you confirm your address from the email we send you.
We intend to use a cookie-light analytics service that counts visits without identifying you. We do not use advertising cookies and we do not sell or share your information for advertising. This section will name the analytics service once it is confirmed.
We do not collect more than each purpose needs. We do not buy contact lists or add anyone to the newsletter without their confirmation.
How long we keep it
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only your email address on a list of people we must not email, so that we honour your request.
- Emails to the desk: as long as we need them to deal with your message and keep a record of any correction we made.
- Visit statistics: in aggregate form, which does not identify you.
Who we share it with
We share your information only with the service providers that send the newsletter and host this site, and only so they can do that work for us. The newsletter is sent through Beehiiv. We will name the hosting and analytics providers here once they are confirmed.
Cookies
Pay Dirt sets no cookies of its own. When you close the newsletter box, your browser remembers that choice in its local storage. That record stays on your device and is not sent to us. You can clear it at any time in your browser’s settings.
The analytics service is still to be confirmed. If we ever add a tool that sets cookies, we will update this section and ask for your consent first.
Your rights under POPIA
You have the right to:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you, and ask for a copy
- ask us to correct or delete information that is wrong, out of date or no longer needed
- object to our processing of your information
- refuse direct marketing, and unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time
- complain to the Information Regulator
To use any of these rights, email editor@paydirtmagazine.com. We will reply and tell you what we have done.
The Information Regulator
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa), which oversees POPIA. Its contact details and complaint forms are on its website.
Changes to this notice
When this notice changes, we update the date at the top of the page. The details still to be added will be filled in before the newsletter or analytics go live.
