Terms of use

Contents 14 sections

Pay Dirt is free to read. These terms explain what you can expect from the site and what we ask of you when you use it. By using the site, you accept these terms.

Who we are

Pay Dirt is a trade publication about surface mining operations for mining contractors in Southern Africa. It is published by the publisher named in the small print at the foot of every page. In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean that publisher.

The publisher’s registered name, registration number and address will be added here.

Using the site

You may read, print and share links to anything on Pay Dirt for your own use and for your work. Please do not use the site in a way that harms it or other readers. That includes trying to break into it, overloading it or copying it in bulk by automated means.

General information, not advice

Pay Dirt explains how things work: costs, rates, rules, machines and methods. What we publish is general information. It is not engineering, legal, tax or financial advice for your operation.

Your site, your contracts and your tax position will differ from any worked example on this site. Check decisions that matter with a qualified adviser. Pieces about laws, regulations and tax give the date the rules were read, and the rules may have changed since.

Accuracy and corrections

We check every piece against its sources before it is published, and we link to those sources. Even so, errors can happen, and figures, rates and rules change after a piece is published.

When we find an error, or a reader reports one, we correct the piece and add a dated correction note. Our editorial standards explain how we source, check and correct our work. To report an error, use the contact page.

Figures and prices

Every figure on Pay Dirt carries a source and the date it applies to. Worked examples use numbers chosen to show a method and are labelled “illustrative”.

The diesel prices we publish are the official wholesale list prices from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR). Each one carries its source and the date it applies from. They are not what your site pays. Your price depends on your supplier, your contract, delivery costs and your location.

The contractor directory

The directory lists mining contractors using information the companies have made public, such as their own websites. No one pays to be listed, and listings are not for sale.

To correct a listing, add details or ask for a listing to be removed, email us from an address at the company concerned. The contact page explains what to include. A listing does not mean we recommend or vouch for a company.

Our content and how to quote us

The articles, glossary entries, tables, charts and other material on Pay Dirt belong to the publisher, except where we credit someone else. Material we credit to others belongs to them.

You are welcome to quote a short passage from Pay Dirt, provided you name Pay Dirt as the source and link to the page you quoted. Please do not republish a whole article, glossary entry or table, or a large part of one, without our written permission. To ask, email editor@paydirtmagazine.com.

We link to the sources behind our figures and to other sites that help the reader. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for what they publish, how they handle your information or whether they stay available.

The newsletter

The newsletter is free. We add you only after you confirm your address from the email we send you (double opt-in). Every issue carries a link to unsubscribe, and you can unsubscribe at any time. How we handle your email address is set out in the privacy notice.

Advertising

Pay Dirt carries house advertisements for the publisher. If we carry paid advertising, it will be labelled “Advertisement” and kept separate from editorial content. Advertisers have no say over what we write. See Advertise with Pay Dirt for the rules we apply.

Limits of our responsibility

We take care with what we publish, and we provide the site free of charge and as it stands. To the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for loss caused by relying on general information without checking it for your own position. Nor are we responsible for loss caused by the site being unavailable for a time.

Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008, where that Act applies to you. Nothing in them limits any other right or responsibility that the law does not allow us to limit or exclude.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. When we do, we change the date at the top of this page. The terms in force are the ones published here when you use the site.
